Last week I received a letter from my GP stating that current research suggests that women who were pre-menopausal prior to treatment for bc and are now on Arimidex, should, (in addition to Calcium & vit D tabs & 2 yearly bone density scans) be offered Alendronic acid (a bisphosphonate also known as Fosamax or Fosamax once weekly).
I'm delighted my GP is so proactive but wonder about others experience with this drug. The once a week option seems preferable - not sure I'd remember not to sit down!
I do know that there are some people with bone secondries who take this drug. I'd be very keen to know about any side-effects before I say yes. (I do not have any bone mets I'm aware of at the moment).

    Many thanks,

    Sarah

Have you had a bone density scan? This is usually indicative of whether you need Fosamax or not. I had one before I started Arimidex and was on the upper limit of normal. Personally I think exercise including weight lifting is a good option.

Hi Sarah, My sister has also just started on arimidex, she is 36, following oophorectomy. she was advised to take vit d and calcium supplements. I am very interested to hear your thread. I think i have read that some of the women in America take these but will look into it further. Interesting!! Going through the menopause so young can obviously cause many problems. Keep us updated, and you must have a great GP.
    Best wishes Claire
