Two weeks ago mum had her partial mastectomy and reconstruction at the Royal Marsden, today she finds out whether her nodes are infected and whether they got good margins. I had a cry last night for the first time in ages. I was talking to a bc friend on facebook and the flood gates opened.
I am nervous as hell for her and will let you know tonight when I get the results.

Thanks for moving my thread Ann, I must admit when I got in from work I suddenly realised I probably has put it in the wrong part, head is all over the place at the moment.

Jules, everythings crossed for your mum... am thinking clear nodes over and over but if not it's not the end of the world, there's still treatments. but still crossing everything
Thank you hunny, I must admit her tumour was 4cm round (lobular) to start with, so I am expecting node involvement, it would be a miracle if there was none and they had got clear margins. I can live in hope eh....!
you sure can. I had no nodes involved, despite having 2 tumours, 1 in each breast, both were grade 3 and nearly 3cm each, and different histology so you can get lucky apparently. Hardly believe it myself sometimes.

Well, miracles do HAPPEN!!! my mum had a tumour which was 4cm round. So this was not an early stage cancer!! Anyway guess what, she had 17 nodes removed and there all CLEAR omg, I can't believe it. Her margins were clear too!! She will need rads to mop up the odd stray cells, but no chemo. I am almost living a dream, I feel like mum has been cured. Ok there are bits of cancer still floating around, but on the whole she has been given a fantastic prognosis. The Marsden are amazing, the best in the whole world.
After spending time with mum tonight, and I kept holding her hand, hubby and I went to a friends bbq. I am a little tipsy, but full of elation.

Happy to hear that your Mum got a clear result on her nodes. Bypassing chemo is wonderful .... I had thought I had got my head round the idea of chemo and was prepared, until they told me they did not think it necessary and the relief was so great it made me realise how much I was dreading it.
Just to set your mind at rest even further ... the 'mopping up' with radiotherapy is a belts and braces approach - it does not necessarily mean that there IS still the odd cancer cell lurking about, more that there MAY be some odd cells left.

After her radiotherapy, she will be having 6 month mammograms to make sure things are ok. She has lobular, and there is quite a high chance that it could come back in the other breast, so she will have the mammograms for five years twice a year. This is very reassuring, as hopefully if it comes back again it will be spotted very quickly.
