Can I ask for a mammogram?
In the UK, the NHS only offers routine mammograms (breast x-rays) under the Breast Screening Programme.
For women over 40, mammograms are one of the tests used to check out breast problems. This would mean seeing your GP (local doctor) first. They may refer you to your local breast unit for further assessment.
Mammograms can be done at a private hospital. If you have private medical insurance this may cover the cost of the mammogram, any other tests you may need and follow-up with a doctor. Otherwise if you are self-funding, the final cost may be expensive.
If you are thinking about having a private mammogram, ask yourself:
- why do I want a mammogram?
- how will I pay for the mammogram, other tests and follow-up?
- can I start by discussing my concerns with my GP?
If you don’t have any specific worries then remain breast aware. If you notice anything unusual, go and see your GP. If necessary, they can refer you to the breast clinic.
