When can I have breast screening?
If you are registered with a GP, the NHS Breast Screening Programme will invite you for a mammogram (a breast x-ray) every three years between the ages of 50 and 70.
You will get your first invitation between your 50th and 53rd birthdays (the age range is due to be extended from 47 to 73 in the near future).
After you reach 70, you can still have a free mammogram every three years but you have to request it yourself. Call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 to get contact details for your local screening unit.
Breast screening can help to detect breast cancer before you have any signs or symptoms, which may mean more effective treatment. Read more about the benefits and limitations of screening our publication, Your breasts, your health – throughout your life.
Women under 50 are not invited for breast screening. Remember to be breast aware and see your GP if you notice any unusual changes.
