About breast prostheses
This section provides practical information about breast prostheses (artificial breast forms used to restore shape), bras and clothes for women who have had breast surgery. It may also be useful for women whose breasts are naturally different from each other in size or shape.
Every year thousands of women will wear a prosthesis for the first time. However, if you prefer not to wear a prosthesis, then you do not have to.
Many women wonder how they will cope emotionally and practically after breast surgery if they have lost all or part of a breast. You may feel that you have lost your ‘normal’ body shape and this can be frightening and upsetting. Reactions like this are very natural and it may take time for you to feel comfortable with the changes to your body.
Most breast prostheses are made from soft silicone gel encased in a thin film. They are moulded to resemble the natural shape of a woman’s breast, or part of a breast. The outer surface feels soft and smooth, and may include a nipple outline. The surface that rests against the skin varies, and you can choose one that feels most comfortable to you.
