Ovarian ablation and suppression
Ovarian ablation and ovarian suppression are the medical terms used to describe removing the ovaries or stopping them from working, either temporarily or permanently. This may be recommended in pre-menopausal women with oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer. It can be achieved by surgery to remove the ovaries, radiotherapy to the ovaries, or by having a drug called goserelin (Zoladex) which works by stopping the production of oestrogen from the ovaries. Goserelin is usually given as a monthly injection.
The side effects will depend upon which method of ovarian ablation or suppression you have. However, because all methods result in stopping your ovaries from making oestrogen, many side effects will be shared.
The most common side effects of ovarian ablation or suppression are menopausal symptoms and these can include:
- hot flushes
- night sweats
- vaginal dryness or irritation
- loss of sex drive.
If you are experiencing any of these menopausal-like side effects such as hot flushes, night sweats or vaginal dryness then you may find it helpful to read our factsheet about managing menopausal symptoms.
Joint pain
Another menopausal-like side effect that may occur following ovarian ablation or suppression is joint pain and stiffness. Sometimes these symptoms will improve with time. If you have joint pain, discuss this with your GP, specialist or breast care nurse who may be able to suggest ways to help such as taking anti-inflammatory pain relief.

Reduced bone strength
Ovarian ablation or suppression reduces the amount of oestrogen in your body. A lack of oestrogen over time can increase the risk of osteoporosis (thinning of the bone). If your treatment involves ovarian ablation or suppression you may be offered a scan to check the density of your bones. Take a look at our booklet on osteoporosis to find out more.
