Breast health promotion

Whatever your age, size or shape it’s important to take care of your breasts. Our Breast Health Promotion (BHP) volunteers are essential in passing on the breast awareness message in their local communities and reaching out to dispel myths and misconceptions about breast cancer. With in-depth training and support from staff, BHP volunteers are able to deliver breast awareness workshops to groups and give information on a one-to-one basis at information stands.

‘I tend to check myself on a regular basis. I know how and what to look for. The workshop was extremely helpful and I now know what to do if I have any concerns.’

‘I feel I am more aware of the signs to look out for and I do check my breasts more regularly! I found the workshop really useful and informative.’

‘I check breasts in the mirror and look more often.’

Comments from people who attended Breast Health Promotion workshops

‘Being able to talk to groups of people and hopefully raise their awareness of breast cancer still makes me feel good, the look on someone’s face as they realise there are more symptoms than just a lump and hopefully they will pass this information on to other people. I feel if just one person goes to get a change in their breast checked by a doctor then my talks are well worth while. I have met some lovely friendly people and been to very different places – I really enjoy my volunteering and it helps me in many different ways.’

Our Breast Health Promotion volunteers do not need to have had a personal experience of breast cancer, but are passionate about women’s health. BHP volunteers find the role rewarding and it is a fantastic opportunity to gain new communication and group work skills. Volunteers are not expected to give medical advice and we provide you with the skills and resources to deliver the breast awareness message in an effective, interactive and personal way.
