4 Years On and Great Scan results ...

Hi

Not sure this is really inspiring but could give hope to others.

I was originally diagnosed in July 2007 with breast cancer and secondary Liver mets at the same time - doubly whammy. I was 39 and had a 3 1/2 year old daughter and an 8 month old son.

I had chemo from Aug 07 to Nov 07 then went onto Herceptin. But then in late 2009 there was some movement in my liver mets, so I went onto capcitabine for 9 months, but this was not working for me. So in September 2010 I started on weekly paclitaxol and had 18 sessions, so finished in February this year.

I had a ct scan at Christmas and in March this year, which showed a fantastic response as there was lots of shrinkage. I am still on herceptin and have just had another ct scan (so 4 months after finished chemo) and apparently there is no sign of cancer on my liver right now. Whether this is because they are too small to see on the ct scan or that for now I am winning the battle is the question. I actually cannot believe that I am winning but fingers crossed.

Anyway after 4 years of fighting cancer, and with my latest scan results, my onc has agreed to have either the lump removed from my boob or a full mastectomy. I have always wanted the source to be removed, but never been allowed as had already spread, so at least now I can go back to the start and remove the original lump, which I can feel all the time and stresses me out.

Hopefully this will give other ladies some belief that we can fight and not to give up.

Thanks for your time
Dawn

Great news Dawn, I am absolutely delighted for you - and you are doing the right thing pushing for your primary to be removed, plenty of evidence that it improves survival.

Dawn this is wonderful news and I am so thrilled for you. It really is time that they started recognising that attitudes are changing and it is now thought to be beneficial to have the source removed at the outset. I think you have been very restrained not to have been jumping up and down and insisting on it. I'm really glad they have at last agreed to do it for you.

Fab news ! I would imagine it will be a great relief to have the primary source removed and like Dawn says it seems to be going towards a change in attitude. Mid July marks my 4 year primary diagnosis with bone mets at the same time and I have always been happy they did the mx after chemo. I'm even now exploring the possibility of having a mx on the other side to balance me up as I didn't have reconstruction.

Good luck with things and here's to many more years for everyone

This is such brilliant news, and can only be helped by removal of the primary. Sometimes extraordinary, miraculous things happen, and I hope this is what we're witnessing here.

Hi dawn
I'm really pleased that you've had such positive news, and interested, as a fellow herceptin lady, that you've been on it all the while, despite some movement in your liver. I hope your liver now remains free of cancer for a LONG LONG time, and I hope too that you will get peace of mind once your lump is removed.

Love, alison xx

Hi Dawn, Iremember we were diagnosed around the same time and i'm so happy that every thing is going so well. I had a mastectomy after pushing for it last year, and it was fine- i even managed to go to my little boys birthday party with a drain slung over my shoulder!. Thank you for sharing such good news.

Fantastic news dawn! so glad you are getting your surgery, I think it should be down to the patient whether or not they want the surgery regardless of having secondaries or not. I agree with you getting the source removed to my mind is an absolute must especially if it helps your mind and thinking which lets face it surely have some impact on our recovery/healing.

Best of luck to you
Sending you lots of love and light

Re: 4 Years On and Great Scan results ...

Dear Dawn,

I never posted here before. I just signed up now especially to say I am thrilled with your news. I was diagnosed also in 2007 and used to follow the forums. I remember you because you had a little girl and a small baby, Jack. I also have 2 children, then aged 6 and 10 so I could relate very well to you. I am Irish but I live in Amsterdam so the English and American forums were a lifeline for me. Anyway Dawn, I just dropped by today because I am not so busy at work, and when I saw your message I felt delighted for you and your family and want to say that to you. I think you are right to get the original lump out, it can only be a good thing to have it removed both medically and psychologically. Wishing you all the very best for a great future with your family.

I was diagnosed, aged 40 and 10 months, at the beginning of September with secondary breast cancer, secondary is in my liver. I am taking tamoxifen and like you have been told no mastectomy, I have been looking for survivors, I am so plesed to read your story, it gives me more hope.
Thank you
xx
