Asparagus??
Has anyone heard of asparagus being really good for cancer patients or is this an old wives tale?
I recently told my landlord of my situation (he kind of guessed something was not right when he came round to see flowers and cards everywhere) He later came round with a tin of green giant asparagus for me i was a bit bemused and he said that he was told he had prostate cancer few years ago and read an article about asparagus qualities that helped cancer, he swears by it but im not completely convinced. He said he used to eat 4 - 5 sticks of asparagus a day and they never had to operate?? and is still eating it everyday.
Anyway i dont dislike asparagus so i guess it cant do any harm but just wondered if anyone else had ever heard of such a thing? Any truth in it or is my landlord a little bonkers?

I have heard this, can't find a link or evidence to confirm this, but I have read somewhere of its anti-cancer properties. But in my 4+ years of ongoing treatment I have also read of a huge amount of other 'superfoods' that claim to be good at 'curing' cancer. So I am afraid that I have become quite sceptical.
But I love asparagus and I do know that it is very good for you, so if it did have anti-cancer properties that would be an added benefit.
Hmm, not heard that one. When I was diagnsoed a very kindly person who has prostate cancer (very very slow growing in his case) snet me a whole heap of dietary suggestions. Most were harmless common sense things (which I think this one is) but a few I was less sure about and asked my onc...his advice was the exact opposite of what the kind person told me. Too easy to tie oursleves in silly knots over food, for most people a healthy mixed diet is the best option - not too much fat, not too much alcohol, not too much chocolate etc etc. Even the scientific research of diet is complex and sometimes contradictory so everyone has to find their own way through.
Enjoy the asparagus - but I don't think you have to eat it daily!
As my old dad always told me "everything in moderation" but do not cut anything out. Even small amount of fat is needed .
Hi Clare, I have just found the e-mail I was sent by a 'concerned friend' about asparagus - I knew I'd heard of it somewhere! I have posted it as a PM.
It was sent to me - I haven't tried it!!!
It's quite a long article if anybody else is interested PM me and I will send it to you!
Not heard that about Asparagus .. I have a friend in Oz who swears by Papaya x
Oops not sure if I posted twice - sorry
Well not sure what's going on...my initial message now doesn't seem to have got through, but my apology for posting twice did. Sorry if I'm being a bit technically inept. This may now appear three times, or not at all, but here goes my original message was:-
When I was first diagnosed my Mum gave me an article on Asparagus, again I think it was for prostrate cancer. As I really thought I didn't like it, I have to say I decided to ignore that advice. I've since discovered what I don't like is soggy overcooked asparagus - lightly steamed is a bit of a revelation, but I can't say I'm eating it every day: just have it because I've finally discovered it really can be quite nice!
Thanks nicky, read through it and it does seem quite interesting if its true.
A little skeptical but ive got a liquidiser so may give it a go and if its not too disgusting may stick with it, cant hurt can it?
asparagus-- its got lots of folic acid. I am interested in that because it helps your liver cope with alcohol. its in asparagus and avocado, two of the veg that i actually like
.
I think if you dont like them dont eat them, but if you do then be aware then they could just be some extra benefits
Hi there,
I have heard all about the Aaparagus and tried it too. Imagine my surprise when a sainsburys deliver came with just 24 tins of asparagus in !!!!!
A kind friend had seen the article too and thought it can't do any harm, so for a few months I plowed my way through it, eating it as a veg, making quiches and soups too. Not sure it worked, it was a bit of a chore to do but i am feeling great at the moment and on a chemo break from secondaries with tumour markers stable. Although the thought of going back to eating asparagus from a tin, now the seasons over doesn't inspire me.............

My mum sent me an e-mail about it. Sadly it's an urban legand, the doctor quoted does not and probably never has existed. Not sure if the link below will work; if not, then copy into your browser or just google asparagus urban legend.

I have no idea why people start these things and I suspect there are no wonder foods
I've just had a look at this article. Snap - it was sent to me quite a few years ago. I don't think it would do you much harm but that's my personal opinion. I've not tried it myself but I am doing many other things that some would call "cranky". I've been juicing with carrots for over 5 years now. As a woman with a Stage 3B breast cancer who is fit and healthy and want to stay fit and healthy, I do what I can for myself. If I think carrots, asparagus, green tea, essiac etc would help then I would go for it. You have to do what you think is right for YOURSELF and disregard what others think.

I‘m not a big supporter of this particular site but the link below gives you their take on asparagus,
