LIVING WELL WITH CANCER initiative
This is a programme that i attend which is run by the Macmillan at my local hospice in the High Peak Area of Derbyshire, it involves attending the hospice on a Tuesday (you don't have to go every week) for the first session starting at 10am we do art, anything we want, then we have lunch, then from 1pm - 2pm we do education, ie, nutrition, relaxation, pain, stress management, the list goes on, this is followed by a support group and meditation, then at the end of the afternoon there is complimentary therapies, and the good thing is, if you don't want to join in it all you can just sit and relax. i call this my "Me Time", this is a twelve week course though i have been going on and off since last July. i have found this really useful as you can also get counsilling there as well, and it has been a great opportunity to meet new people who know what your going through. I am hoping that the Macmillan will roll this initiative out to other areas across the country as i am sure that if people knew about this service then they would use it. Don't ever be put off by the word "Hospice" its a place for all care, not just end of life.

ps, could do with having the spell checker back!!!!!

Do all hospices offer this? It sounds like a fantastic chance to have some me time
well i know that we are one of the area's piloting this scheme, so far its been fantastic for the people like myself and the others that use the service, might be a good idea to get in touch with the macmillan and find out when your area will start the initiative up, if you need any help with getting their number then let me know and i will find it for you

my macmillan nurse (north Tyneside / Newcastle upon Tyne) organised a series of weekly sgroup essions over 12 weeks that took us through healthy eating / exercise / positive thinking / etc it was great. similar to the rosy daniels packs which were helpful. The sessions didnt suit everyone because you had to ask yourself some tough questions. but I loved having time to reflect and feel like I wasnt alone / i liked having goals for improving my health and mental attitude. I didnt really find the informal breast cancer groups as useful so it wa great for me. so depends which you prefer
no free make up though... damn
I am too from the North East,(Northumberland area.)
Would you know if another one of these twelve week sessions is going to start soon ?
If you have the details can you let me know please.
Thanks

Hi
Yesterday I went to a "Look Good Feel Better" session at the Mcmillan Centre at my hospital (Plymouth). I am just about to finish 8 months of treatment (surgery, chemo and radiotherapy) and this session was a great boost to me. There were 9 women, not all breast cancer patients (eg lung, brain as well) and for 2 hours we were given a make up demo and make overs, as well as being able to chat to each other about our experiences. We all left with a big bag of goodies - full of cleansers, moisturisers, every type of make up, perfume, all good brabd names (Estee Lauder, Clinique, Lancome, Revlon etc), not sample sizes but full size. I believe the cost of each bag was about £200 and were put together by Boots. One of the girls from Boots told me it was their way of putting something back into society. I thought that was great and gave us all a brilliant afternoon.

Hi Monica
I've emailed them and had a response. They run sessions at the Freeman Road Hospital. They have given me a number to call, so will do that when I get back from my weekend away. Looking forward to it.
Have a great weekend everyone
