my mum has brain mets My mum was diagnosed with brain mets last month. I live half a world away from her, and sometimes it feels like I\'ve lost her already - conversing on the phone is becoming more difficult for her. I wonder if there\'s anybody who\'s had a similar experience or has any thoughts on the matter ...

brain mets Dear Mariab
I am really sorry to hear about your mum. What treatment programme have her doctors suggested?
There are ladies on this site who have brain mets who are responding well to treatment. Have a look under \"Secondary breast cancer\" and read their posting as I am sure it will give you hope. You said that conversing on the phone is becoming more difficult, is that because she is struggling to talk? My sister has brain mets and one of her symptons was \"slurred\" speech but she has received both chemo and wbr and she seems to have this under control more although she says that there are days where she really has to concentrate on getting her words out.
Please let me know how your mom is doing.

my mum has passed away Dear Avon67
Thank you for replying. I read your profile and like your sister, my mum\'s breast cancer spread to her lungs and then her brain. But she was 78 yrs old and didn\'t want chemotherapy for the lung mets, and after much thought decided against radiotherapy for her brain mets. The brain met was only diagnosed about 6-7 weeks ago. At that time conversation on the phone was already highly unsatisfactory, but after she started steroids her symptoms improved for a month. She started getting worse about a week ago (in terms of \"struggling to talk\"), then she had a chest infection, then suddenly the brain met took over and she went downhill rapidly in just over 24 hours. In many ways I am glad that she didn\'t suffer for too long ...
I hope your sister continues to improve.
Best wishes
Mariab
Dear Mariab,
Very sorry to hear about the loss of your mum.

thanks Dear Karen
Thank you for your sympathy ... I visited her in August last year (she had undergone mastectomy, and was having radiotherapy), and as I left I asked myself whether I would see her again. Thankfully I did see her in August this year, although she wasn\'t in good shape then, having had radiotherapy to the lung & suffering the side effects. I had hoped to be able to see her in December, but it wasn\'t to be.

I am soo sorry Dear Mariab
Sorry I haven\'t responded earlier but I haven\'t been on the site for a couple of day.
I am very sorry to hear that your mom has passed away. It must have been a really tough decision to not undergo radiotherapy. When my husband gran was diagnosed with liver cancer, she too opted not to be treated and she passed away 2 weeks later. She felt that she had had a wonderful time and that she at the age of 76 was ready to let go. It was really hard on the family but in the end as you say, at least she didn\'t suffer for too long. In fact, her passing was incredibly peaceful, surrounded by her loved ones.
My thoughts are with you
Kind regards
