New, bit freaked out

Re: New, bit freaked out

New, bit freaked out Hello,

I'm 28 and found out last week I have grade 3 invasive ductal breast cancer... totally floored by it. Feel like I'm doing alright, but wanted to pop on here and meet some people going through the same thing.

Was told by everyone "oh it'll be nothing you're so young" so it has really come as a shock as I'm sure it does for everyone whatever your age.

Booked in for full mastectomy on 10 March, taking out lymph nodes too... It hasn't spread anywhere else (found out yesterday) so that was a huge relief as I was expecting more bad news, mainly as after last time I don't want to expect good news and be disappointed. Don't want to know prognosis etc, just want to focus on getting better.

Anyone out there have much appreciated words of wisdom! Am taking it a day at a time and trying not to be scared

xx

Re: New, bit freaked out

me too Hi. I'm 39 was diagnosed with same. Fortunately because my boobs were big enough I was able to have a WLE last month and none of my lymph nodes had been infected either, which my oncologist nurse says is an excellent prognosis cos everything was caught in time. Whilst not being a pessimistic person, since finding my lump I dealt with things by expecting the worse then things could only get better - fortunately that's the way everythings gone so far! Just started chemo this week which I was dreading but so far havn't been affected too badly - just very tired and feel a little sicky today (2 days on) but nothing horrendous. So my advice would be deal with things in your own way, be realistic and take it a step at a time - don't panic about what might be - your prognosis is very good and in a few months you'll be back to normal (whatever that is!!?!)
Remember there are many women on this site with very reassuring news and if nothing else, can help to keep each other sane! Keep posting and good luck!

Re: New, bit freaked out

Hi Lizalou Really sorry about your recent DX. I was DX 29th August last year, having only celebrated my 27th birthday a week before, like you I was totally "floored" by the news. Mine was also a grade 3, invasive ductal. I've had a masectomy, full node clearance and reconstruction, I've also finished Chemotheraphy 2 weeks ago and am due to start Tamoxifen next week.

I Have found the whole process to be a real rollercoster of emotions, so take each day as it comes. I think people are telling you it'll be "nothing" to possible give you encouragement, but comments this can be really frustrating. One thing having this disease has taught me, is that no one, not even the one's that love you the most, have any idea what it's really like, this is where support from Breast Cancer Care and Tenovus has really helped. I would really encourage you to take up the facillities that they offer, I.e, pear support, young womens forums etc ( if you go to home page and look at "what we can do for you", it'll tell you more)

It was a really isolated time to begin with, but having discovered BCC, I realised i'm not the only young suffer out there! I think this is a time were you have to be completely selfish and think of yourself. Although I'm constantly told how "strong" I've being, I still get my bad days, so don't ever feel like a failure when these happen.

Wishing you luck for the 10th March, Lisa x

Thank you for posting. It really makes a difference to hear from people actually going through it. One step at a time...!

Hi Lizalou

Sorry to hear about your dx.... just wanted to add to mearings comment to take up all the support that is offered through BCC - I did the peer suppport a couple of months ago when I was going through a tough time on chemo & it really helped me. Although all my family & friends have been really supportive it wsa just good to talk to someone who had already been there & knew what I was going through / how I was feeling.

Good luck with the surgery & keep using these forums - they are brilliant!

Sarah x
