Pregnancy Safe after breast cancer
just thought i would post about this research article i came across... i know many you women are told not to get pregnant following BC so im sure you will find this of much interest.
if you have an athens password you can read the full text article here....
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6T68-516Y4SV-2&_user=9499971&_coverDate=01%2F31%2F2011&_alid=1593635407&_rdoc=1&_fmt=high&_orig=search&_origin=search&_zone=rslt_list_item&_cdi=5024&_sort=r&_st=13&_docanchor=&view=c&_ct=1565&_acct=C000073180&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=9499971&md5=1e6f816a201f134d747c35923e5faa66&searchtype=a
however this is what the Nursing Times has to say......
"Breast cancer patients should not be discouraged from becoming pregnant, according to scientists who found that bearing a child would not compromise their survival.
Scientists from Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, Italy and the US collaborated on a literature review of 14 past studies involving 1,244 breast cancer patients.
They found that women who conceived a child after cancer diagnosis were 41% less likely to die than those who did not become pregnant. Survival was most common in women with a history of node-negative disease.
No significant differences were found in the outcomes of women with a history of breast cancer who became pregnant and those who did not and were known to be free of relapse."
and this is the conclusion of the article
"In conclusion, while acknowledging that selection bias
partly contributes to the reduced risk of death exerted by
pregnancy occurring after breast cancer; it is still reasonable
to conclude that pregnancy is safe in women with a history
of breast cancer. Thus, counselling against pregnancy in these
women remains unjustified. We believe that these results
could influence the way these women are counselled in breast
cancer clinics. Hence, more efforts should be directed towards
preserving the fertility of young women who are willing to
consider pregnancy following completion of their adjuvant
therapies. Patients’ preferences regarding their future fertility,
and the desire to have a biological child should be critical factors
during the decision-making process."
i have a copy of the full text article which i can send anybody who is interested... although it is fairly technical it might be handy if your wanting to argue your case with your oncologist.

Ms Molly the research isnt saying if you have a baby you will live for ever.... lots of women who never had children or had them 20 years ago still got BC and still died with a couple of years from mets.... what the article is saying is it has studied 14 research papers and looked at what their inclusion and exclusion criteria.... age of onset, type of caner, ER positive etc
some people who have babies will still get cancer, some people who dont have babies will still get cancer... some people who have cancer then have a baby will get a recurrence some people who have cancer then dont have a baby will get a recurrence.... however from the study those who go on to have a baby have a longer overall survival.
as they say in the article those who have serious illness or recurrence within the first year or two are less likely to go on to have a baby if they are so poorly so in some ways this could be seen to skew the control sample data.... but for those well enough to get pregnant and have a baby it was found that this was a benefit.
you are only 1 person and i know that you feel quite strongly about it but one persons experience isnt a valid research sample hence they do studies like this... its only one study and there will probably need to be others.... but i was just trying to shed a bit of brightness as fertility is a very big issue for many young women who are dealt the cancer card.
perhaps it would be worthwhile chatting these issues through with your onc and see what he actually thinks of the study from his professional viewpoint.
i can send you a copy if you like but im off on hols so pm me your email to my inbox if you want it and i can send it when i get back.
