Secondary voices

I was involved with the Secondaries Task Force while it existed.
Now I would like to know:
How many members of Breast Cancer Voices are there now?
How many have, or have had, bc? - presumably the others are health professionals?
How many have secondary bc?
Is there a planned ratio of primary to secondary?

Hi mrsblue,
Thanks for your questions.
I’ve answered these below for you.
How many members of Breast Cancer Voices are there now?
There are 423 members of Breast Cancer Voices as of November 2011
How many have, or have had, bc? - presumably the others are health professionals?
Nearly all (around 99%) our Breast Cancer Voices have or have had breast cancer. There are a small number of people who are family/friends of people affected by breast cancer and a few are healthcare professionals who work with breast cancer patients.
How many have secondary bc?
We have this data for most of our Breast Cancer Voices. However, this is an optional question we ask when people join Voices (some people do not wish to share details of their diagnosis and we respect this).
Of those who have shared their diagnosis details, 46 have a secondary breast cancer diagnosis.
Is there a planned ratio of primary to secondary?
We don’t have a set ratio of primary to secondary that we are aiming for; however, we have been focussing on recruiting more people with secondary breast cancer over the last few months as we are keen to increase the number of our Voices who represent this group and their experiences.

Thanks, Lucy and especially Emma - helpful and much appreciated.
I was at the book launch ("Tips") which was very well organized, I thought... I came on my own, not knowing anyone beforehand. Of those I spoke to, almost all were BCC staff - but I was very impressed by the BCVoices member with secondaries who had been invited to speak. That's the main reason for my question.
Thanks mrsblue I will pass your comments back to Emma
Best wishes
Lucy
