Support Group Southampton area?
Tue, 10/11/2009 - 12:33
#1
I am new to this areas and wonder if anyone knows of any support groups locally or withing the region. I have moved here in the midst of treatment but have not been referred to BCN as yet as I am onto radiotherapy now. Any information on support services within the area would be really welcome.

hi C !
just wanted to say hello - am in your area I think -having had my rads at Southampton (I live further up)
I think if you ask at Southampton Oncology Centre they could put you in touch with support groups and there's the Macmillan Centre there too...you'll find this forum really helpful and supportive too -there are a few of us in your area. xxchipperxx
Hi C,Not sure where you are from exactly but am in the Southampton/Winchester area. I am a year on from treatment and 20 mths on from dx.I also know of a very good support centre near to me (in the town where i live). Depending on where you live it may be accessible to you. It is called Jane Scarth House. It does alot of stuff that the macmillan centre does in Southampton but is much smaller and feels more homely. Excellent counsellor there and does alot of complimentary therapies.Feel free to ask me any questions you may have or PM me.Hope your treatment goes well for you.

Not sure where my previous post went so sorry if I repeat myself if it pops up later!
Just to say Hello.
Like Chipper and Rachy say ask at Southampton. I'm there for Radiotherapy from tomorrow for 4 weeks and will be going to the macmillon centre for aromatherapy/reflexology. You can have a coffee and a chat there too. I'm just past Winchester near Basingstoke. Perhaps I'll see you there... Pm me if you'd like.
I'll be arranging a meet for a coffee for a few of us later in the month/ next month I'll put some details on the forum re dates and, again, perhaps you'd like to pm me.
Take care

Hello Katy, Rachy and C I too am currently attending Southampton for radiotherapy at the onocology centre and would be interested in meeting up with you sometime in the future. Katy my appts are in the morning so I may see you!
I also hope to get to Jane Scarth House at some point depending on my energy levels after the treatment.

Hello Chipper, Rachy, Katie & Chris
Firstly apologies for not replying sooner. I thought this site worked similar to facebook and sent notification of responses - DUH! Thank you all for responding and letting me know you are out there. It would be great to meet up yes as I do find it very useful to talk to people who 'know how it is' as well as loved ones who can only imagine it (thankfully that is all they have to do!).
I am currently 15 out of 25 rads so if anyone is around over next wee while at the hospital or if would fancy a meet up elsewhere then I would keen to make contact.
I have already met one lovely lady on this journey who is at hospital around same time as me - my appts are 09.30 ish daily.
Thanks again for info & responses and now I do know how this site works I can be more responsive!!

Hi Christine
My appointments are at 8.42 and I usually leave around 9ish. We'll have to have a coffee. I'll see you in the coffee lounge near the car park entrance to arrange date and time if you like.

Hi All
is this group still up for meeting? I have emerged from the hell of chemo to be struck down by a mega cold - such luck, but it would be great to meet everyone for a drink before Christmas. I can make anywhere - Winchester, Romsey, Southampton at pretty much any time although I have some work to do this week.
I am starting rads in Southampton general on Jan 11th - is anyone else still doing rads at that point?
Hope you're all doing well
Helen.
I would defo be up for a meet up and chat - I am finished rads but am in SOuthampton so let me know. I go home to Scotland for Xmas for a while but will be back here as of 4th Jan. Let me know (I must remember sign in more often to this site though!!!).
Well done Helen on getting through the chemo! Hope your cold clears up soon. Cx

Monday day is free for me, Weds I am busy. Where would you like to meet? I'm ok about anywhere but it would be good to get out of Romsey at some point! Send me a pm and we can arrange something. Maybe Rachy will join us.
Helen.

And what time is good for everyone? KatieF and I meet at cafe nero usually which is in the high street. What do you all think ?
Rachy xx
At the mo I can make any time on Monday. I'm waiting for a call from the Turner centre, re some treatments, on Monday but they have my mobile and I'm not expecting them to say go in straight away.
Really looking forward to seeing everyone.
x & hug for the weekend
I'm sorry, I've messed up! I had forgotten that I am going to see a friend on Sunday and won't be coming back till Monday evening. Doh, it's the post chemo brain. SO I can't make Monday, after I suggested it as well.
Hope you have a good coffee and mince pie and hope to catch up with you all some other time - maybe in the New Year.
Happy Christmas all.
Helen.
Sorry I didn;t make it either - my skin was very poorly from Rads. Getting there now. Hope everyone is well. Cx
Hi C
we missed you, really sorry about your skin and hope it's holding up now. I've a scabby red nipple at the mo!!
Take care and we'll catch up soon
Love Katie
HI All
sorry I missed you. Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.
I got tattooed last week ready for rads next week, but would be good to meet up sometime soon if everyone is up for it.
all the best
Helen
Hi Helen
I had a lovely christmas and new year, hope you did too.
Mondays or Weds afternoons are great for me, as long as I get 24 hours notice I can usually make anywhere!
What date do you start your readiotherapy? Do you know which Linac you're on? I ended up using all of them at Southampton and all the staff were lovely.
See you soon?

Christine

Rach xx
Me too. Feeling a bit lonely since finishing rads last week. Need to stop myself shopping to make up for it! Free anytime Thurs or Fri or next week.
Helen.
Right, I've checked, Next week I can do Monday afternoon, Wednesday anytime til 4.30, Thursday morning only til 10am and Friday but have hospital appointment that day and don't know what time yet!
Would love to get together for a coffee and/or a walk. I can meet anywhere as long as I have directions!!
Katie x x x
Actually if it's nice Winchester has a lovely walk that's not too long and Rachy and I do like having a drink at cafe nero!
Monday afternoon would be good. A walk and then coffee/tea would be great. Winchester is no problem for me and I can give Rachy a lift if necessary.
Helen.
That's great Helen. I look forward to seeing you and Rachy, hopefully Chipper and Christine can make Monday afternoon too. Rachy's got my mobile number if needed.
Katie
