Zumbathon

About

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re supporting some fantastic instructors who are hosting Zumbathons to raise money for people living with breast cancer.

1194 Research suggests that regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight might help reduce a person’s chances of developing breast cancer. So Zumba classes are a great way to increase awareness and raise money to help support people affected by breast cancer.

By holding a Zumbathon for two hours on 8 or 9 October, these instructors will be supporting every mum, dad, sister, brother or best friend living with breast cancer.

Past Zumba events

Jessica Fox

Jessica, who plays Nancy in the soap Hollyoaks, is a keen Breast Cancer Care supporter and has recently qualified as a Zumba instructor. She persuaded 16 cast members of Hollyoaks, including Nick Pickard (who plays Tony) and Bronagh Waugh (who plays Cheryl), to don some silly pink outfits and Zumba-it-up to raise money for Breast Cancer Care’s Pink Fridays campaign.

 The Hollyoaks Zumbathon

'We got pretty sweaty, and pretty gross, but we had a really good time! I wanted to hold this class today to help support the 50,000 people that are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. You should join in too!'
Jessica Fox

Curves Maidstone South

The Zumbathon was just one of the fundraising events held by Curves and raised around £450. This was raised through 100 women attending the event, and running a few craft stalls. Members sold home-baked cakes, hand-made cards and painted pictures.

There was also a lady practicing reflexology treatments – all for Breast Cancer Care.

'Popular games from the day included 'decorate a bra' competition and guess the weight of the boobie cake!'
Curves Maidstone South

The Zumba lasted one and a half hours with three Zumba instructors giving their time.

Suzy Clayton Jones

Suzy held a Zumbathon for Breast Cancer Care in May 2011. The event was a great success raising £1,488.

'I hold 3 to 4 Zumbathons a year and they are definitely getting bigger and better each time. This year's event was brilliant with ten instructors and 200 people dancing for a great cause. Next year we’ll need a bigger hall.'
Suzy Clayton Jones

Suzy’s event didn't stop at dancing — the instructors turned their Zumbathon into a pink party, with a raffle, stalls and even a bra fitting service.

1603 Suzy's top tips:

  • Sell tickets before the event at a cheaper rate which will entice people to book beforehand
  • Bring in local businesses to promote themselves on the day and ask for raffle prizes
  • Hold a raffle after your Zumbathon to keep class members staying to the end of the event.

Helen Smith

Helen held a Zumbathon at the Victoria Centre in Crewe where they danced their socks off for 3 hours for everyone living with breast cancer.

Freshly baked cakes, and hand made jewellery were sold on the day to help raise money, as well as many donations that were received from local residents and also local organisations such as J.C. Trucking, Lincoln House and James Walker. They raise a magnificent £1,677.57 for Breast Cancer Care.

Louise Gale

Louise held a two and a half hour Zumbathon for Breast Cancer Care in Crawley. The event raised an incredible £6,500 for the charity, but cake sales and car boot sales brought it up to £9,000.

Louise is fundraising as part of a bigger project to raise enough money to take part in a ten day trek along the Inca Trail in Peru, which will take place next April.

'It was amazing to see the huge sea of pink. This was the biggest ever Zumba party in Crawley. Now it's full steam ahead with training for the Inca Trail trek.'
Louise Gale

Local Zumba instructor Joanne Cooper helped coordinate the dance exercise party, with 15 instructors leading the mass of participants. Louise’s top tip for others holding Zumbathon events is to use Twitter to get people involved.

Alisa Hessey

Alisa held two events, both of which were attended by around 30 people. She joined forces with other Zumba instructors and roped her mother and two sons to help decorate the halls – they got involved in the Zumbathon afterwards!

'The first Zumbathon had a couple of my friends who are also Zumba instructors there with their class members, so we kept having a dance off which was so funny.'
Alisa Hessey
