Research and service evaluation at Breast Cancer Care

Breast Cancer Care undertakes research to support the overall vision and mission of the organisation, which is to provide the highest standards of treatment, support and care through the provision of high quality, innovative and responsive services.

Breast Cancer Care is not a research funding body and therefore does not formally fund research. We do not fund or undertake research that seeks to identify the causes or cure for breast cancer, or research that involves clinical trials of medicinal products or medical devices.

Breast Cancer Care’s research encompasses three broad areas:

  • research and evaluation of our services to ensure they are evidence based
  • research that looks at the psychological and social needs of people with breast cancer and finding the most effective ways to meet these needs
  • research that informs our policy and campaigning work.

Where possible, Breast Cancer Care seeks to undertake research in collaboration with other researchers, academic institutions and other voluntary organisations, and to obtain external research funding.

Research governance

To help Breast Cancer Care achieve its research-related aims and objectives and ensure our research is of high quality we have:

  • Research Committee, which is made up of external members who represent a cross section of expertise and interests, in particular psycho-social research in oncology.
  • Service User Research Partnership (SURP), which is a group of eight users who help to represent the views and needs of people affected by breast cancer in our research portfolio. Members are represented on each of our research project steering groups and on our research committee, and their feedback is used to inform discussion about current and future research plans and initiatives.
  • Code of Good Research Practice, which outlines how and when we support external researchers/institutions with their research, and guidelines for staff involved in research.
