Commenting on latest figures revealing significant cuts to Cancer Networks, Jane Hatfield, Director of Policy and Research at Breast Cancer Care, said:

'People undergoing breast cancer treatment and their families will be concerned about this news may mean for them. The Cancer Networks were set up with the aim of improving care for all cancer patients.

'Cuts to these services will mean a loss of expertise in the field and represent a backwards step in the improvements many have worked so hard to bring about in recent years.

'Cancer networks have played a crucial role in supporting Breast Cancer Care’s Standards of care for people with secondary breast cancer. The standards set out the level of care and support anyone with a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer should expect to receive. It is critical that the momentum of any good work on secondary breast cancer is not lost in the future as Cancer Networks reduce in number to become part of the new strategic clinical networks.

'We want assurances that patient care will not suffer as the NHS changes are made, now and in the future.'
