Women across Manchester diagnosed with breast cancer are being encouraged to take a step in the right direction and get active with Breast Cancer Care’s Best Foot Forward Health Walks.
The walks are being held across Greater Manchester and can help women facing the harsh reality of a breast cancer diagnosis feel better after treatment.
The weekly walks last between 30 minutes and one hour. They follow a beautiful easy route for people of all abilities. Led by trained walk leaders, the walks provide a chance to get some exercise and also to socialise with others who’ve had a breast cancer diagnosis.
As the only UK-wide breast cancer support charity, Breast Cancer Care knows many women can feel very isolated after a diagnosis and meeting others with a similar experience can help.
Regular physical activity can help alleviate the overwhelming and on going side effects of breast cancer. Walking regularly has many other benefits, including increasing stamina, helping to maintain a healthy weight and improving confidence and wellbeing.
Hil Peel, 62, from Wilmslow, a Walk Leader at Breast Cancer Care’s Best Foot Forward service, says:
I have always been a keen walker and since my breast cancer diagnosis almost 16 years ago I continued to stay active. After finding Best Foot Forward in my local area I couldn’t wait to volunteer to share my love of walking and help other people facing breast cancer.
We get to head outside along some beautiful routes and the walks are tailored to the group so are very accessible. It’s lovely to go for a walk with people who’ve also had a diagnosis and can understand how you may be feeling. We always end the walk with a visit to a cafe together to relax and chat – it’s such a supportive group and people have become great friends.
The group meets on alternate Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10.15am at Worsley Woods and on alternate Fridays and Saturdays at Bramhall Park at 10.15am. There’s no need to register just turn up on the day. People are welcome to bring along friends or family members.
