The first in-depth study of people with secondary breast cancer has found that current care is inadequate.

The study which was published in BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care followed the experiences of 10 women with secondary breast cancer aged between 40 and 78. The study was part of a previously published survey of 235 women by Dr Elizabeth Reed for Breast Cancer Care.

Draft guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended that a drug called pertuzumab (Perjeta) should not be used by the NHS to treat a type of secondary breast cancer.

In July NICE rejected another drug for treating secondary breast cancer called everolimus (Afinitor).

A new system of pricing branded medicines known as value-based pricing (VBP) is due to start from January 2014. The aim is to give NHS patients better access to effective and innovative medicines.

However there's still time for us to highlight the particular needs and issues of people affected by breast cancer as the Department of Health (DH) and The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) continue to discuss how VBP will work.
